Pineapple Upside-down Cake

Pineapple upside-down cake!  Not exactly a typical Spanish dessert, but Manolo is getting pretty darn good at some more traditionally American desserts.

Here is his step-by-step explanation:

1) Cut a pineapple into thin slices

2) In a pot, melt butter with brown sugar and spread out in a baking dish

Derretir la mantequilla con azúcar moreno en un cazo y extender en un recipiente

3) Put the pineapple slices over the melted sugar and butter and save for later.

Poner las rodajas de pina sobre el azúcar.  Reservar para después.

4) To make the cake:

Separate 5 egg yolks, 5 egg whites, 3+1/3 cups of flour, 2 cups of sugar, 2 tbsp of baking powder, 1 cup of butter, and 1+2/3 cups milk

(*Note: if you want to make the smaller round cake, as seen below, use just half of the these ingredients!)

In a large bowl, add the softened butter and beat.  Little by little, add the remaining ingredients, except the egg whites, until fully mixed.

Preparamos el bizcocho:

Separamos 5 yemas, 5 claras, 400g de harina, 400g de azúcar, 2 cucharas de levadura en polvo, 250g de mantequilla, 400g de leche

En un recipiente grande ponemos la mantequilla pomada y batimos.  Añadimos poco a poco el resto de los ingredientes excepto las claras hasta conseguir una masa homogénea.

5) Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks.  (Add a pinch of salt to make it easier.)

Batimos las claras a punto de nieve con una pizca de sal para que monte más fácil.

6)  Add the beaten eggs whites to the mixture and mix gently.

Añadimos las claras a la masa anterior y movemos todo suavemente hasta conseguir una mezcla homogénea.

7) Add the batter to the baking dish, on top of the pineapple.

Añadimos la mezcla al recipiente encima de la pina.

8) Spread the batter out evenly and bake at 330ºF for 45 minutes.

Extendemos bien para igualar. Hornear a 165ºC 45 minutos.

9) After baking, let the cake cool before cutting and serving.

Después de hornear, déjala enfriar un poquito antes de cortar y servir.

This is the smaller version, as mentioned above in step 4.  If you prefer this size, use half the ingredients to make the cake batter.
